I’M SO GLAD YOU’RE HERE.
At a get together recently, I was standing in the kitchen when a friend of mine approached me. He had a confused look on his face (like something has been on his mind for ages), and he asked, “Cindy, what do you do exactly?”
I get this question all the time. It’s actually to the point where I can almost sense it coming. I love being asked this question.
It must be perplexing for those on the outside looking in. I work from home; I make money online; I am able to support my husband and I so he can focus on renovating the house we bought into our dream home (and it’s so close to being done – it’s amazing!); we get to leave for months at a time to travel; and we’re nearly debt free.
So my answer?
I Help Female Business Owners Grow Their BusinessesOnline
In all honestly, most people aren’t ready for that type of response. And they’re not ready for us.
The Reality of Solopreneurship
Freelancing online (like being a virtual assistant or working as a social media manager for clients) is tough. It’s more than just trading your time for dollars, freelancing is like reverse time-and-a-half. When you’re freelancing and you prioritize providing quality work to your client, you almost always spend way more time on a job than you are getting paid for.
It’s the nature of having integrity in your work.
Plus, more often than not when freelancing, you’re just a little task master for someone. You’re not invested in your client’s business, you’re not invested in their results, and either because of that or simply because of the nature of the working relationship, they’re not all that invested in you either. They just hand you marching orders.
I don’t find that empowering at all.
The Next Evolution of Freelance
In my work with clients and in their businesses now that I’ve evolved into an Online Business Manager, I often end up working with their “virtual assistants”, and I am always struck by one thing: their skill level!
By nature, those of us who work online supporting other businesses have a few things in common:
- We’re fiercely independent (why we’re drawn to the freelance life in the first place)
- We’re resourceful (no one is there to show us the way, we figure shit out on our own)
- We’re committed to our success (there is simply no going back to a 9-5 job with 2 weeks vacation per year. Just. No. Way.)
This is why freelancers and those who categorize themselves as virtual assistants are THE PERFECT PEOPLE to transition into being Online Business Managers.
As an Online Business Manager, you’re not only involved in the execution of the projects (what you’re likely already doing now as a V.A….), but you’re involved in the strategy behind the execution, you have ownership of process, your integrity is valued, and as a result, you get paid a lot more.
If you’d like to start evolving your freelance career, and start unpacking what’s involved in becoming an Online Business Manager so that you can:
- Make more money
- Be more invested in your projects and your client’s success (personally and financially)
- Stop working the reverse of time-and-a-half (i.e. work less!)
- And get more enjoyment out of your career online
